Vegetable Love (Social Body Mind Map) is a diagram of an untitled kinetic sculpture consisting of a pair of plant-like silicon rubber bodies jerking on top of a polystyrene plinth. Social Body Mind Mapping is a diagrammatic framework and ‘estrangement technique’ which I have developed in order to explore the ‘origin’ of artworks with respect to capacities, motivations, materials and organisations: the ‘unknown’ forces which have brought an artwork into existence.
Dean Kenning’s artworks range from kinetic sculptures to videos and diagrams, and employ DIY, allegorical and autodidactic methods and modes of representation to generate visceral, uncanny and humorous encounters and to explore political and philosophical material. Solo exhibitions include Where IT Was (Piper Keys, 2018), The Origin of Life (Beaconsfield, 2019) and Psychobotanical (Matt’s Gallery, 2019). He is the winner of the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award 2020-21. He is Research Fellow at the Contemporary Art Research Centre, Kingston School of Art and also teaches on the Fine Art MA and Art & Philosophy MRes courses at Central St Martins.
