Cathy Lomax is a London based artist and the director of Transition Gallery, which opened in east London in 2002.  Lomax’s paintings and installations assimilate the seductive imagery of film, fame and fashion, juxtaposing it with personal narratives and the everyday. Her particular interests are femininity, masquerade and the way that popular culture is constructed, consumed and related to.

In 2014 she was an Abbey Painting Fellow at The British School at Rome and in 2016 won The Contemporary British Painting Prize. Her solo exhibition The Blind Spot is profiled by Matt Price in The Anomie Review of Contemporary British Painting (2018) and her work is in numerous collections including Soho House, Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, Priseman Seabrook Collection and private collections nationally and internationally. Her recent exhibitions include Star Bar, Broadway Cinema, Letchworth Garden City (2020), The Immaculate Dream, Collyer Bristow Gallery, London (2019) and Dear Christine, Vane Gallery, Newcastle (and touring) (2019).

In 2016 Lomax began a PhD at Queen Mary University of London, researching the role of makeup and artifice in the creation of the Hollywood female star image. Her painting and text, ‘The Girl with the…’, inspired by the Hollywood star Gloria Grahame, is published in Fandom as Methodology, edited by Catherine Grant and Kate Random Love (Goldsmiths Press, 2019).
