Charlie Burtenshaw (b. 1996) lives and works in London.
Her practice comprises of painting and drawing. The imagery produced may suggest propositions of places and objects but through flatness, deny narrative and fiction in favour of an awareness of the painting process.
Working in a restless and even sceptical approach, the paintings are made in impulsive bursts with long periods of looking and sitting with the work and rearranging compositions in order to break out of one strict methodology and attain a sense of instability. Never knowing how close to completion, spontaneous action suddenly may tease out an instinctual feeling of success.
An intention to unlearn and reverse engineer her own practice prompts the finished paintings to be regarded as by-products which allows her focus to fall on her surroundings which seep into the work in the form of recurring motifs.
