Circling across an open narrative of painting and drawing, Hannah Murgatroyd’s work is sited within an island space of the imagination upon which characters, scenarios and places emerge. Set beyond chronological time, her painted cosmos explores the balance between interior and exterior realms of existence; representing a world eroticised, emotive and engaged deeply with surface.
After studying at the Royal College of Art (2005) and the Royal Drawing School (2006), she moved to Germany, and turned to painting in 2009 on a residency at Leipzig’s Spinnerei. On returning to the UK in 2014, she won the Exeter Contemporary Open, and was included in ‘Women Can’t Paint’ at Turps & ASC Galleries in 2017. She had a solo presentation at Draw Art Fair (Saatchi Gallery, 2019) with Von Goetz and was featured in ‘Monster/Beauty: An Exploration of The Female / Femme Gaze’ curated by Marcelle Joseph at Lychee One in 2020. A mentor on the Turps Correspondence Course, she works between Somerset and Devon.
