Dunhill and O’Brien have been working together since 1998 after what was originally intended to be a one-off collaborative project. Rooted in the traditions of sculpture, their aspiration, to make work together ‘unencumbered by individual taste’, has led to projects involving elaborate processes, motorised apparatus and performative ‘research’ activities. They have participated in exhibitions and residencies in the UK, Ireland, Holland, Germany, Italy and Japan including the British School at Rome, Setouchi Triennale and solo and group exhibitions with White Conduit Projects, Roaming Room and Danielle Arnaud Gallery in London.

In 2019 a large scale work for the British Ceramics Biennale, Terms and Conditions, at Airspace Gallery and the Gladstone Pottery Museum, involved 15 participants recruited to the project for their 3D thinking and making skills, including a dentist, hairdresser, masseur, boulderer, dressmaker, engineer and those with former trades as bakers and beauticians. A structure filled the majority of the gallery, creating a workspace where a sequence of activities involving verbal description and clay modelling were filmed. This information was used by Dunhill and O’Brien to make a 3 tonne raw clay form shown during the exhibition. The image of participants ‘Melissa and Gav’ was taken by photographer Adam Gruning.
