Wilma Johnson is a painter, writer and founder member of the Neo Naturists, whose work as an artist ranges from traditional oil on canvas to body paint, collage and paintings on rubber gloves. Her images of women aim to reclaim the nude, and nudity, from an empowered female perspective.

She was born in London in 1960 and has a degree in Fine Art from St. Martins college of Art. In 1980 she founded the Neo Naturist body painted performance art group with Jennifer and Christine Binnie, appearing throughout the 80s in venues ranging from the Royal Opera House to the Spanish Anarchist Centre and collaborating with artists such as Michael Clark, Andrew Logan, Leigh Bowery and Grayson Perry.

In 1987 she left the group to concentrate on her painting, living and working in Mexico, Ireland and the Basque Country for over 25 years. Her autobiographical paintings follow these journeys, giving a subjective idiosyncratic view of places and cultures in which she lived.

Following a retrospective at Studio Voltaire in 2016 she returned to London re-joined the group with recent performances including the Alternative Miss World at the Globe Theatre, the ICA, Port Eliot and House of Voltaire.

Her current work takes inspiration from classical mythology, seeing every woman as a goddess and the goddess as everywoman. Her memoir Surf Mama is currently being developed as a feature film.
